DHANBAD: The CID inquiring into the alleged suicide of inspector Umesh Kacchap, visited his residence within Topchanchi police station campus on Thursday, and recorded the statements of witnesses and officers connected to the case.

The body of Kacchap was found hanging from the ceiling of his official residence on June 14. He was investigating the shooting of a truck driver accused of smuggling cattle, and was allegedly under pressure.

Led by DIG RK Dhan, the CID team inspected the room where Kacchap allegedly committed suicide, and inspected documents of the truck drivershooting case.

Sources said the team, which also comprised SP V M Homkar, found inconsistencies in the FIR in the shooting case, particularly in case dairies and witness statements.

Many witnesses in this case suggested that they were called by police officers and forced to sign on blank papers. They actually were not aware what was mentioned on those papers, police sources said.

The team also questioned officers of the Topchanchi police station about the mental state of Kacchap, his mobile location and conversation records before he allegedly took the extreme step.

The CID team also visited Rajgunj police station on Friday and will submit a report of its findings later to the government and the court.

The Jharkhand government had last month transferred Dhanbad superintendent of police (SP) Surendra Kumar Jha and suspended two police officials in connection with Kacchap’s suicide.

“Prima facie, it appears Bagmara DSP and police station in-charge of Hariharpur are the culprits following which they have been suspended,” an official statement had said, as the government ordered a departmental inquiry into the case.
