DHANBAD: The Dhanbad anti-corruption bureau ( ACB) on Thursday arrested Mukesh Kumar, a stenographer-cum-clerk in the confidential section of the Bokaro deputy commissioner’s (DC) office, for allegedly accepting Rs70,000 in bribe from a public distribution system (PDS) dealer.

A team of ACB led by deputy superintendent of police Chandadeep and executive magistrate Deepmala arrested Kumar when he was receiving the money from Kamal Prasad outside the main entrance of the DC’s residence, said Sudarshan Mondal, superintendent of police (SP) of Dhanbad ACB.

Mondal said Kumar had demanded Rs 70,000 from Prasad for clearing a bill of Rs 12 lakh. The bill was submitted for supply of ration under door-to-door food supply scheme of the state government.

The ACB laid a trap after receiving a complaint from Prasad. “After receiving money, Kumar tied to entre the residential office of DC, but he was arrested as the ACB team was manning the gates,” he said.

Officials said Kumar got the government job on compassionate grounds in 2010, following the death of his father, who was employed with the health department in Bokaro.

Soon after his appointment, Kuamr was shifted to the confidential section of DC as he was computer-literate. He was also in-charge clerk and nazir of the supply department.

Bokaro DC Mritunjai Barnawal said, “I have warned officers and clerks in meetings to not indulge in corrupt practices. If any government employee indulges in such practices, he will face action.”

At the time of going to press, Kumar was being brought to Dhanbad.
