CWC rejects father’s custody plea for two kids rescued from confinement
JAMSHEDPUR: The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in East Singhbhum district refused to give custody of two sons of a mentally unstable woman to her husband or his family members until she recovers, officials said here on Thursday.
The woman’s husband Kislay Kumar has agreed to bear the cost of her treatment and education of their sons. The CWC rescued the children, aged eight and five, from two-month confinement in a flat in Basanti Apartment under Kadma police station in the district on Monday night.
Their mother underwent some medical tests at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) here on Thursday. Kumar works in a pharmaceutical company in Jammu.
His father JA Prasad from Siwan, the woman’s father Teras Prasad and her brother Anil Kumar reached the city from Chapra on Wednesday.
“We have decided that the kids will remain at Mother Teresa Welfare Trust (MTWT) till their mother is mentally stable. Meanwhile, MTWT will take care of their education and their mother’s treatment. Her husband has agreed to bear the cost of her treatment and the children’s school fees and school bus charges. He has also given an undertaking that he will meet the woman and the two children every month from January 1,” said CWC chairperson Pushpa Rani Tirkey.
She added that the woman’s family members had been asked to tend to her. “Based on MGMMCH psychiatrist Dr Deepak Giri’s report, the woman may be referred to higher institutes such as RINPAS, and her family has been asked to be with her there too,” added Tirkey.
Meanwhile, the two children could not recognise their father or their mother’s father and brother when they came to meet them at MTWT. “They are healthy and happy at MTWT and playing with other children. Our focus is now on restarting their education and sending them to school at the earliest,” Harpal Singh Thapar, MTWT chairperson, said.
The rescued woman was on Thursday evening admitted in RINPAS, in Ranchi after being taken along with her husband Kislay Kumar and her father and brother.
