OVER 70 SABAR TRIBAL RESIDENTS IN POTKA BLOCK LIVE IN HIGHLY DAMAGED HUTS MADE OF TWIGS AND STICKS

JAMSHEDPUR: East Singhbhum district administration has taken initiative to build houses for Sabar families, the tribal people in Tangrain village who are categorised as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) by the government.

Over 70 Sabar tribal residents in the village under Potka block live in highly damaged kachha houses and huts made of twigs and sticks and are depended on forest products for living. There is no education facility for them.

Potka block officials, led by block development officer (BDO) Kapil Kumar, took steps to bring these primitive tribe people to mainstream. Five Sabar families were given Birasa Awas on Saturday while seven more will be constructed in soon.

East Singhbhum deputy commissioner (DC) Amit Kumar also directed block officials to ensure electricity supply to Birsa Awas along with water tank and toilet facilities in the locality.

Potka BDO said that the administration would focus on academic facilities to Sabar people.

Officials would try to get children admitted in residential school for tribals in nearby Gwalkata village, Kapil Kumar added. He said that block officer would motivate all parents to send their wards to schools. Once they get education, basic facilities being provided to them would be meaningful, he further added.

“Block officials will regularly visit the Sabar colony to improve their awareness level”, Kapil Kumar said.

Government officials ensured monthly 35-kg rice supply to each of Sabar family under Dakia scheme along with gifting vessel for them. Each of adult Sabar residents will get annual pension of Rs 1,000 soon. They will also be provided cooking gas cylinder under Pradhan Mantri Ujawal Yojna.

Once houses are provided to them, they would not spend days and night in forest areas, said Ramo Sabar, who got house under Birsa Awas scheme. He thanked the government officials for various basic facilities provided to his locality.
