Furious at the sight of her drunken bridegroom, a woman refused to wed on Saturday, forcing the baraatis to go back. The incident occurred at Pradhuman Chhapar village in Bathana panchayat, under the limits of Kesariya block, in East Champaran.

The bridegroom, Rahul Kumar, arrived at the bride’s house, which was the wedding venue, in an inebriated state and began making a scene. The bride had been waiting in her wedding finery, ready for the jaimaal (garland exchange ritual), but seeing her soon-to-be husband in such a state, she immediately put her foot down and refused to let the wedding go through.

“All efforts to pacify the girl were in vain. She did not budge from her stand,” said Devlal Yadav, husband of Gita Devi, mukhiya of Bathana panchayat.

“Nobody could believe what she said,” recalled Sanjay Tiwari, a fellow villager. The baraat, which had come from Kotwara village, located in Paru police station area, Muzaffarpur district, had to return eventually.

The bride’s family was crestfallen, but local villagers supported her stand, and put pressure on the bridegroom’s family to return the pre-wedding gifts they had received.
