JAMSHEDPUR : A local court on Thursday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for repeatedly raping a minor, leaving her pregnant in Jamshedpur two years ago. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the convict, Uday Gagrai, failing which he would be given six months’ additional rigorous imprisonment.

“The court of additional district judge (ADJ-5) Subhas sentenced Uday Gagrai to life imprisonment and fine of Rs 25,000. The court had convicted him of raping a minor girl for four months that left the victim six months pregnant,” Ranjan Dhari Singh, advocate representing the victim told HT. He informed, “The High Court had to convene a special hearing on Sunday to allow abortion of the unborn child of the victim, given her fragile health and future.”

Singh said Sidhgora police had lodged an FIR on charges of rape against the convict on August 30, 2017 . In the FIR, the victim stated that Gagrai had raped her for four months.

Singh had moved the HC requesting the court to allow her to abort her unborn child. Gagrai, a resident of Birsanagar Zone, was arrested in September 2017 by Birsanagar police.

The victim, however, said. “He made my life hell – raped me regularly for four months and threatened to kill my parents all the while. He should have been hanged.” Her mother too echoed the same sentiments saying such criminals should be hanged. “He had said he considered the victim as his sister... Yet she did this to her. He has maligned all human relationships,” the victim’s mother said.

THE RAPE VICTIM AND HER MOTHER, HOWEVER, SAID THE MAN SHOULD BE HANGED
