JAMSHEDPUR:A Muslim woman on Friday lodged a complaint against her husband for pronouncing her instant triple talaq and then marrying his girlfriend here in Mango police station.

Neha Tabassum Parveen, resident of Afreen Tower on Road No-14 under Mango PS, said her husband Abdul Rafiq did not return home after divorcing her 10 months ago. The practice of instant triple talaq has been made a criminal offence.

“Neha Tabassum Parveen had come to the police station with BJP leader Fatima Shaheen to lodge a written complaint, accusing her husband Abdul Rafiq of giving her triple talaq. We are investigating the case and will take appropriate action soon,” Arun Kumar Mahatha, Mango PS officer-in-charge (OC), told HT.

Parveen said, “One night he came with his Kapali-based girlfriend and gave me triple talaq and left. He has not returned to me or our two sons till date. He, however, continued to threaten me, my sister and her husband of dire consequences if we complained to police or sought help from anyone else,” Neha said, explaining the reason behind the delay in filing police complaint.

The woman, who originally hails from Gujarat, had a love marriage with Rafiq six years ago despite her parents opposition to the alliance. She has currently been living at her sister’s house in Sankosai. Abdul Rafiq, a land broker, resides at an address in Kapali with his second wife.

Local BJP leader Fatima Shaheen said. “Parveen was under constant threat to her life. She is also concerned about the safety, education and well-being of her two sons. We have filed written complaint today and we hope the police will take swift action against Rafiq,” said Fatima.
