15 migrants reach home

JAMSHEDPUR: All the remaining 15 migrant workers stranded in Wardha (Maharshtra) after their fellow worker Vijay Khandait died at the Wardha District Hospital on May 23 morning returned safely to West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand via Tatanagar station here on Wednesday, officials said.

“We brought back all the stranded 15 migrant workers safely from Wardha by train from Nagpur on Wednesday evening under a special arrangemen­t with Wardha deputy commission­er (DC) and superinten­dent of police (SP). This was possible after all of them tested negative for Covid-19 in Wardha. Deceased Vijay Khandait also tested negative and his last rites were performed at Wardha by the district administra­tion,” Arava Rajkamal,

West Singhbhum DC, said.

“His fellow workers have brought back his mortal remains as per his family’s wishes. All the 15 migrants have been sent to their paternal village of Matagutu under Jhinkpani police station in West Singhbhum district by bus. They will be kept under quarantine for 14 days,” he said.

West Singhbhum SP Indrajit Mahatha was also present at the Tatanagar Station along with the DC to receive the migrants.

The group of 16 migrants, including Vijay, had reached Wardha on May 22 night after walking 640 km from Pune when Vijay fell sick. He later died at Wardha District Hospital at on May 23.

The district administra­tion and the police had sent ₹ 10, 000 to Mahati Khandait’s bank account at Wardha.

The rest of them were quarantine­d at ITI College in Wardha.
