PATNA: The police have detained a man in connection with the firing at the residence of BJP leader and former minister Baidyanath Sahni at Gunahi-Kashi village in Samastupur district late Tuesday night.

Samastipur’s superintendent of police (SP) Vikash Burman said an FIR was lodged against five identified persons on the basis of the statement of the former minister’s kin Vijay

Kumar Sahni on Wednesday.

According to the FIR, around 9 pm Tuesday, five persons, identified as Ganesh, Ranjit, Awinash, Bipin and Ramnath, reached the former minister’s house and misbehaved with him. When locals started gathering, the miscreants escaped while firing in the air to terrorise the people.

Police force have been deployed at the village and deputy superintendent of police asked to probe the incident, the SP said.

Though motive of the miscreants was not clear, Baidyanath said he had raised his voice against the rising crime and criminals which could be the reason behind the abortive attack on him.

Baidyanath, who was earlier an animal husbandry and fisheries minister, had resigned from the Nitish Kumar government and joined the BJP in October 2015.
