In Meerut, Covid infection cases go past 1,000 mark

MEERUT: With 34 fresh Covid-19 cases reported in the district on Tuesday, the total number of infected patients crossed 1,000.

Of these, 70 persons had lost their lives during treatment.

“With 34 new cases, the total positive cases have risen to 1001 in Meerut,” said an official.

The rising number of cases have worried the state government and health officials who are now going to launch a 11-day intensive door-to-door screening drive from July 2 onwards to segregate suspected cases by conducting their on the spot rapid antigen test and to send them for treatment.

Meanwhile, night curfew from 8 pm to 6 am would continue to check the movement of people in the night and to break the corona chain.

Officials said cases have increased more than four times in six districts of Meerut division in past one month and Noida witnessed the fastest increase in the number followed by Ghaziabad, Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshah­r and Baghpat.

Similarly, number of deaths due to Covid-19 also increased more than four times in past one month.

The division had total 1,469 positive cases till May 31 and 42 deaths, which gone up to 6,120 cases and 182 deaths till June 29.

Noida had 414 cases and 6 deaths till May 31 which went up to 2208 cases and 22 deaths till June 29. Similarly, Ghaziabad had 305 cases and 4 deaths which multiplied to 1459 cases and 53 deaths. Meerut had 433 cases and 27 deaths which gone up to 967 positive cases and 70 deaths.

On the other hand, 114 cops have been infected by the virus in the zone and over 400 cops who came in their close contacts were placed under quarantine in past one month.

Doctors and health officials attributed casual approach of people during the process of unlock a major reason for spurt in cases.

UP COVID TALLY

Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday reported 21 more fatalities due to Covid-19 and 564 fresh cases, officials said.

The death toll in the state now is 718 with the coronaviru­s tally reaching 24,056.

Additional chief secretary, medical and health, Amit Mohan Prasad said 16,629 of the total infected have been discharged after getting cured. The rate of recovery is around 69%, he said.

The state now has 6,709 active Covid-19 cases, Prasad added.
