WASHINGTON/ TORONTO: New US Covid-19 infections rose by more than 47,000 on Tuesday, according to a Reuters tally, in the biggest one-day spike since the start of the pandemic.

California, Texas and Arizona emerged as new US hot spots of the pandemic, reporting record increases in infections. Cases in California rose by 8,441 on Tuesday, a Reuters tally showed, the highest one-day rise in the state.

US President Donald Trump said he was growing “more and more angry at China” over the spread of the coronavirus, as American health officials warned they were not in “total” control of the crisis.

“As I watch the pandemic spread its ugly face all across the world, including the tremendous damage it has done to the USA, I become more and more angry at China,” Trump tweeted.

Nearly 130,000 people across America have died from Covid-19 and millions have lost their jobs as states and major cities ordered residents to stay home and businesses closed. The economy contracted sharply in the first quarter and is expected to crater in the second.

Alphabet Inc’s Google said late on Tuesday it was delaying the reopening of its US offices by around two months because of a surge in the number of coronavirus cases in some states.

All of Google’s US offices will now remain closed at least until September 7, it said.

CANADA BORDERS TO STAY SEALED IN JULY

Canada will keep its borders sealed till at least the end of July as the government extended its ban on travellers. The prohibition was originally announced on March 16 and the only exemption is for those coming from the US for “essential” reasons.

The announcement came from a spokesperson for the Canada Border Services Agency, who stated that the agency has “implemented travel restrictions across all ports of entry in all modes of transportation - land, sea, air and rail. All travel, including tourism and recreation, is covered by these measures.”
