KANPUR: Uttar Pradesh gangster Vikas Dubey was shot dead in an encounter on Friday after he allegedly tried to flee after the car carrying him from Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain overturned on an isolated stretch of the highway on the outskirts of Kanpur, the police claimed, a day after he taken into custody outside a temple in Ujjain that ended a frantic and often frustratin­g manhunt for a fugitive behind one of the deadliest attacks on policemen in recent years.

Just 42 km away from Kanpur, the SUV that was carrying him — part of a three-vehicle convoy of the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) — toppled after going out of control to save a herd of cattle on the Kanpur-Delhi highway near Sachendi as the road was slippery, said additional director general (ADG) of police, law and order, Prashant Kumar.

Kumar said Dubey snatched a pistol from one of the policemen injured in the accident and was shot dead nearly a kilometre away after the STF teams in other vehicles chased him and surrounded him at an open field, an account that opposition parties said raises questions.

Senior superinten­dent of police (SSP), Kanpur, Dinesh Kumar P said the gangster was asked to surrender but opened fire multiple rounds at the police team. He was killed when the police fired back in self defence. He was taken to the Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital where he declared brought dead, he said.

Lalan Mohan Prasad, deputy inspector general (DIG), Champaran range, said the security personnel also recovered three self-loading rifles, a 303 and one AK-56 from the spot, besides bodies of four Maoists.

The deceased Maoists were identified as zonal commander Bipul, a resident of Muzaffarpu­r district, and his associates Kiran, Nakul and Sonu, police said.

“We received a tip-off about

the presence of about 10 Maoists and soon the team rushed to the area to conduct raids and arrest them,” said Dharmendra Jha,

assistant superinten­dent of police (operation).

“The gun battle lasted about 45 minutes in which four Maoists were killed,” Jha said.

“We had definite informatio­n that Rambabu Sahani alias Rajan gang was active in the area and was trying to create a base with the help of other Maoists,” said Sanjay Kumar, IG, SSB.

At the time of filing this report, the bodies were being brought to Bagaha.
