JAMSHEDPUR: A 44-year-old man was about to set out with a band party from his house in Jamshedpur for his second marriage on Friday evening, but ended up in jail after police arrested him midway for giving triple talaq to his first wife for failing to fulfil his dowry demands, police said on Sunday.

“Abdul Subhan was sent to jail on Saturday under Section 498 A of IPC and 3/5 of The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. He was arrested from his house at Baganshahi under Azadnagar police station in the district late Friday evening following an FIR by his first wife on Thursday,” Naresh Prasad Sinha, Azadnagar

police station officer in-charge (OC), said.

Subhan became the first person in Jamshedpur to have landed in jail under The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) or Triple Talaq Act.

As per available information, police arrested Subhan as he was about to leave his house for marrying a girl of Kapali locality in Seraikela-Kharsawan district late Friday evening on the basis of a complaint filed against him by his first wife, Rukhsana Parveen.

According to Rukhsana, Subhan gave her triple talaq for failing to fulfil his dowry demand of ₹10 lakh and also to marry another girl. “I was married to Abdul Subhan in 2007. He was given cash and items worth ₹15 lakh by my parents at that time. Yet, he has been demanding ₹10 lakh dowry. He gave me talaq and was going to marry another girl after I expressed my inability to pay the additional dowry after my father’s death recently. Hence, I filed the FIR against him,” Rukhsana has alleged in her police complaint.
