DIVERSITY DOMINATES A VIRTUAL GOLDEN GLOBES
The red carpet and the paparazzi were missing, but the glamour was intact at a ceremony conducted from remote locations across the world
Not the usual jazz but dramatic nonetheless — the Golden Globes this year were a virtual affair amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Most celebrities appeared by remote video while the small audience in attendance at this Beverly Hills affair was made up of frontline workers.
Nomadland won the top movie honour at the ceremony marked by impassioned calls for more diversity. Canadian comedy Schitt’s Creek and The Crown, dominated the TV category, with the former’s Catherine O’Hara being declared Best Actress and the show itself winning Best TV series.
Nomadland also fetched its Chinese-born director Chloe Zhao, the Best Director award. She became the second woman to win in that category, and the first woman of Asian descent.
Sacha Baron Cohen, creator of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, won for Best Comedy movie actor, while singer Andra Day won for her role in The United States vs. Billie Holiday.
In another win for diversity, Chadwick Boseman was awarded Best Actor (posthumous) for Black Bottom. “He would say something beautiful,” said his widow Simone Ledward Boseman.
British actors Daniel Kaluuya and John Boyega were among other winners of colour chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which was criticised for having no people of colour in its 87 members. “We all know award shows are stupid,” said Fey. “Even in stupid things, inclusivity is important and there are no Black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.” Jane Fonda, recipient of the Cecil B DeMille Award, in her speech made the case for all voices in Hollywood be heard, saying stories “really can change people”.
