A Kodiak bear named ‘Tag’ is seen sitting behind John Cox, a Republican candidate for the California governor’s election, as he greets the audience during a campaign rally at Miller Regional Park in Sacramento on Tuesday. Cox, who is contesting against Democratic incumbent Gavin Newsom, showed up at the campaign event with the bear as part of his campaign theme - “Beauty and the Beast” - with Newsom representing “beauty” or political glory in the state and Cox casting himself as the “beast”, the one who will shake up California’s politics. Cox’s maverick move sparked a buzz but was criticised by animal rights groups as a political stunt.
