International Beer Day: Say cheers to the popular drink with these facts!
Celebrated on the first Friday of every August, International Beer Day (IBD) is an ode to beer and its makers. The day, which falls on August 6 this year, began originally in California, US, in 2007 when a man named Jesse Avshalomov decided that the popular drink deserved an honorary day.
“IBD has gained popularity in the last five to six years. Before that Ocktoberfest was celebrated. But people in India realised that October is not a suitable month. Beer is a summer drink and there couldn’t be a better month than ugust for it,” says Kama

“Beers are broadly divided into two categories — ale and lager — based on the type of yeast used in the fermentation process. Ale, which uses top fermentation process, is heavy, thick and pale, while lager is prepared with bottom fermentation process. It is light, airy and refreshing,” says Rahul Singh, founder of an alcoholic beverage chain.
Monks’ stint with beer

As the name suggests, craft beer is handmade and also prepared in small batches. Known to brew the best beers, monks in some monasteries were the first to experiment with this drink. Former US President Barack Obama brewed some in the White
House too.

“Indians don’t drink for just the drinking purpose; they do it to quench their thirst. Light food goes well with beer. Barbeque and beer is also a good combination and Indian tandoor goes well with it,” adds Kama.
