When you learn Indian classical, your vocal chords get trained in a way that no other form of music can teach. I believe if one has mastered it, they can sing any genre. SIDDHARTH MAHADEVAN, Musician

Siddharth Mahadevan, who shot to fame with the rock version of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) and Zinda from the same film, has also been making his presence felt on social media. The musician has often been seen jamming with father, composer-singer Shankar Mahadevan on Indian classical songs, which has captured the attention of many.

The young musician believes that the current generation of singers, including emerging talents, should get trained in classical music. “It’s an added advantage. I would strongly recommend upcoming, young musicians to be formally trained, as it helps enhance musicality and techniques as a singer,” he remarks, adding that the millennial generation of listeners have an appetite for such music contrary to popular opinion.

For Mahadevan, classical music is “one of the greatest tools any singer can have”. He elaborates, “I believe that if one has mastered it, they can sing any genre of music. It’s a tool that you have at the back of your mind that you can pull out to adapt and meld into any genre, be it R&B,hip-hop, pop or jazz. It also helps even when you are scatting.” He adds, “When you learn Indian classical, your vocal chords get trained in a way that no other form of music can teach you.”

The singer, who had recently lent his voice to the title track of Toofan, says that he loves rendering sports anthems. But composing and singing one is no cakewalk.

“There are a few things one has to keep in mind while creating a sport anthem. What’s really important is to maintain the energy that the sport stands for. You would want people to feel the energy and sport as much as possible. It has to be easily hummable, so that thousands of fans can sing it together,” Mahadevan shares.
