National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah on Friday announced his decision not to contest the upcoming party presidential election, triggering widespread speculation that his son, Omar, who is currently the party’s vice-president, is likely to succeed him.

“I will not be contesting for the post of president any longer. The elections for the post will be held on December 5. It is time for the new generation to take over the responsibilities,” the former chief minister told news agency PTI.

Anyone from the party can contest for the post. It is a democratic exercise,” he added.

NC chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said Farooq was adamant not to review his decision even as his party colleagues tried to convince him to continue. In a statement, he said the party’s general secretary has been tasked with completing the election process on December 5.

“Until that time… (Farooq) continues as president of the party,” the statement said.

While the immediate reason behind his decision is not yet clear, party functionaries close to the 85-year-old said it was due to health concerns.
