A groom from Bihar hired a chopper from New Delhi for ₹20 lakh to use it as a palanquin to cover a distance of around 10 kilometres to solemnise his marriage at Phulwari subdivision of Patna late on Friday, said the bride’s family.

Dr Prabhat Kumar (35), a general physician at College of Medicine & Sagore Dutta hospital, Kolkata, hired a chopper from a New Delhi firm to fulfil the last wish of his father, Ramanand Singh, a farmer, who died on July 11 last year, two days after the engagement of his son with Nishi Kumari (28).

The groom’s residence is in Parsa Bazar area of Phulwari subdivision. The bride stays at at Karorichak, 10 km in the same subdivision.

“My father wanted me to go in a chopper for my wedding and get my wife home in it. Today, I have fulfilled my father’s last wish by hiring a chopper and going in it for my marriage,” he said.

“I will return home tomorrow with my wife, mother and my father’s portrait, which I carried with me today in the chopper, as my chopper landed in an adjoining field near the bride’s house for my ‘baraat’ (marriage procession),” said Dr Kumar.

“Fulfilling my father’s last wish comes first, money comes next. So, spending ₹20 lakh on hiring the chopper did not matter much to me,” he added.

Dr Kumar’s younger brother, Dr Rajiv Kumar, is posted at the Chittaranjan hospital in Kolkata. His elder brother, Sanjeev Kumar, is a businessman, he said. Their mother, Urmila Devi is a home maker.
