Residents of a village in Jharkhand held a police team hostage for hours after a 82-year-old man died during a raid his home on Saturday night, police and locals said.

The incident took place at Roro village in Khunti district.

The deceased was identified as Mohammed Nizamuddin (82). The police were looking for his son Kallu (40), accused of being involved in sale of banned meat.

According to family members, the police barged into the house after breaking the door lock. Nizamuddin died after he was pushed and dragged out of the house.

Angered family members and villagers held the police team hostage for several hours. They were allowed to leave after senior police and district administration officials reached the village late night and assured villagers of justice.

“Besides our grandparents, mother and two sisters, there was no one else in the family when the police came. We asked for search warrant, they said it was online. They pushed and dragged my grandfather in the house. He was completely fine and had gone to sleep after having his meal. What was his fault?,” said Afreen Anzum, granddaughter of the deceased.

Khunti superintendent of police Aman Kuamr said he is getting the allegations probed.

“Prima facie, police did not hurt the deceased. We are getting a magisterial inquiry conducted,” said Kumar.
