NITISH KUMAR, CM

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Monday inaugurated the Ganga water supply scheme (GWSA) in Gaya and Bodh Gaya, under which floodwaters will be treated for supply to households in the two towns of southern Bihar. He had dedicated the scheme in Rajgir on Sunday.

Speaking after the inauguration of GWSS, Kumar said, “In view of the hardships people faced during summer, I always wanted it to happen. I am happy it has happened today. It will also help tourists.”

The CM said the project had been envisaged as part of the “Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali” project in 2020 in view of the water woes in the region.

Leader of opposition Tejaswhi Prasad Yadav, water resources minister Sanjay Jha and former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi were among those present on the occasion.

Jha said utilisation of floodwaters on such a large scale for lakhs of people in the dry regions was a first and Nitish Kumar would always be remembered for this endeavour. “It is a historic day for Bihar,” he said.

However, leader of Opposition Vijay Kumar Sinha said the scheme would prove to be wastage of public money like the jalnal scheme in the state.

“Now, the days of Nitish Kumar and his party are numbered. Kumar knows it. Both will disappear due to the way they have taken Bihar people for a ride in the name of development. Bihar’s education is in a shambles, but there are no takers. The government has ended up spending over Rs 4,000 crore on a scheme that would prove to be a mirage in the days to come,” he said.
