Buy, wear, return, repeat: The secret of returnaholics
Have you ever worn an outfit once, returned it at the store and got your money back? Not because you didn’t like it or the size didn’t fit, but simply because you wanted to wear something else to the next party? Well, young fashion lovers confess that they have turned into returnaholics — people who buy fashion garments, wear them once and return them. The one month refund policy set by high street brands is a godsend for them. A male model, on condition of anonymity, accepts making the most of the policy. “We party every day. Repeating clothes is super embarrassing. I buy suits and return them after wearing once. There is nothing wrong in it. You just have to take care of the clothes and hide the tag, so that it doesn’t show while you wear it,” he says. Tanvi Malik, an 18-yearold student from Delhi University, confesses, “I had to attend my fresher’s party but didn’t want to buy a dress as I wasn’t going to wear it

again. I borrowed money from a friend, bought a new dress, wore it, returned it at the store, got the money back and paid off the loan. It was so simple.” However, everyone doesn’t think that it’s fair. “I would repeat my clothes instead of cheating. Imagine how embarrassing it will be if you get caught. Why can’t you take outfits on rent?” says Amanpreet Sassan, 26, designer. In the West, stores track and blacklist customers who regularly return items. But stores in India do not have such a tracking system. When we asked the spokesperson of one of the high-street brand about this, he was cool with customers returning clothes. “Unless the clothes are damaged or soiled, we don’t have a problem,” he said.
