Angel bright, life in death; get off the road, don’t suck my breath.” These words by author Harper Lee rang in our ears as we entered the residence of Charge D’affaires, US embassy to India, Marykay Loss Carlson. On Friday night, she opened her Delhi homr for early celebrations (Halloween is celebrated on October 31). Lights were dim and music, spooky, as Michael Jackson’s Thriller greeted us. The front yard was turned into a graveyard, and at the entrance, Marykay’s husband, Aubrey Carlson, dressed as Grim Reaper, welcomed us. Cookies with cobweb frosting, carved pumpkins and grimlysmiling skeletons added to the mood. This is Carlsons’ second Halloween in India. “Back home in Virginia, we have a two-car garage, but we can’t fit a car in there! We’ve Christmas decor on one side, Halloween on the other,” she said. And, from unicorns to pirates, and corpse brides to cowboys, we spotted ’em all. The Charge D’affaires saw guests off from time to time, and even offered candies, part of the Trick or Treat custom. As we left, we saw a black cat jump across the boundary wall, merging with the black of the night. “Angel bright...” Happy Halloween, y’all!
