Medical science push for Jamia Hamdard
Jamia Hamdard University has appointed Dr Habil Khorakiwala as its new chancellor. Dr Khorakiwala will occupy this office for a period of five years beginning December 2014. Addressing a press conference recently, he stated, “Incidentally Jamia Hamdard University features among the top 25 universities of the BRIC countries and South Africa. This university commands considerable forte in both the core and allied subjects of medical science and I intend to create a vision by consolidating these strengths. Research and innovation will have a pronounced emphasis in my vision and I hope to spearhead fresh breakthroughs in terms of drug discoveries, particularly with respect to terminal diseases and diseases like tuberculosis and cholera that continue to plague the developing world.”
Dr Khorakiwala is the chairman of Wockhardt Group, a leading healthcare conglomerate with its presence across pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and super speciality hospitals. Speaking on the occasion, Dr G N Qazi, vice chancellor, Jamia Hamdard University, said, “Dr. Khorakiwala is an established leader in science and technology and I am confident that the university would benefit from his direction and guidance.”
Dr Khorakiwala, is an alumnus of Purdue University and Harvard Business School. Purdue University has bestowed the prestigious title of Distinguished Alumnus on him for his contribution to the profession of pharmacy. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Shiromani Vikas Award for his ‘Outstanding and Inspiring Contribution towards National Development’.
