Medical science push for Jamia Hamdard

Jamia Hamdard University has appointed Dr Habil Khorakiwal­a as its new chancellor. Dr Khorakiwal­a will occupy this office for a period of five years beginning December 2014. Addressing a press conference recently, he stated, “Incidental­ly Jamia Hamdard University features among the top 25 universiti­es of the BRIC countries and South Africa. This university commands considerab­le forte in both the core and allied subjects of medical science and I intend to create a vision by consolidat­ing these strengths. Research and innovation will have a pronounced emphasis in my vision and I hope to spearhead fresh breakthrou­ghs in terms of drug discoverie­s, particular­ly with respect to terminal diseases and diseases like tuberculos­is and cholera that continue to plague the developing world.”

Dr Khorakiwal­a is the chairman of Wockhardt Group, a leading healthcare conglomera­te with its presence across pharmaceut­icals, biotechnol­ogy and super speciality hospitals. Speaking on the occasion, Dr G N Qazi, vice chancellor, Jamia Hamdard University, said, “Dr. Khorakiwal­a is an establishe­d leader in science and technology and I am confident that the university would benefit from his direction and guidance.”

Dr Khorakiwal­a, is an alumnus of Purdue University and Harvard Business School. Purdue University has bestowed the prestigiou­s title of Distinguis­hed Alumnus on him for his contributi­on to the profession of pharmacy. He is also a recipient of the prestigiou­s Shiromani Vikas Award for his ‘Outstandin­g and Inspiring Contributi­on towards National Developmen­t’.
