State Congress senior vice president Vishvendra Singh has criticised the BJP government for Monday’s scuffle between policemen and party workers in Kota.

Demanding home minister Gulab Chand Kataria’s resignation, Singh said that Kataria has failed to handle the police department properly.

On February 20, an altercation had taken place between BJP MLA Chandra Kanta Meghwal, the party workers and the police over issuance of a challan to a BJP worker for smoking at a police station.

Meghwal’s husband Narendra allegedly slapped circle inspector (CI) Shriram Badsara following which the police resorted to lathicharge.

The party workers then started pelting stones at the policemen, causing injuries to members of both sides.

A total of five cases were registered against the MLA, her husband and other party workers along with five police personnel.

Kota superintendent of police had shunted the five policemen to police lines.

“The state government is torturing CI Shriram Badsara, who has been sent to Uttar Pradesh for poll duty. During the day, the police are deployed for ensuring security but at night they are slapped.

“It’s shameful. The government should consider legal action against Meghwal and her supporters,” he told mediapersons.

Meanwhile, BJP’s Rajasthan unit president Ashok Parnami said that appropriate action will be taken against those guilty for the scuffle.

After visiting the party workers who had suffered injuries in Kota, Parnami told reporters, “Those who are guilty will not be spared.”

State agriculture minister Prabhu Lal Saini said a detailed report will be forwarded to the chief minister.
