Martyr’s daughter refuses to be martyred, leaves DU campaign
University student Gurmehar Kaur, whose social media campaign against the ABVP reignited free speech and patriotism debate, on Tuesday withdrew from the campaign and said she has shown enough courage and now wants to be left alone.
A day after the Delhi Commission for Women urged Delhi Police to probe the alleged rape threats to Kaur, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered by the cyber cell on Tuesday, and Kaur given police protection. Senior officials also said they have spoken to her and strengthened protection around her residence and premises.
Students and teachers of DU and Jawaharlal Nehru University, Left and AAP-affiliated student groups marched in protest against the violence in the city’s Ramjas College and rape threats issued to Kaur.
The march has been variously named as Fight Back DU, Students against ABVP and DU against Gundagardi.
“The campaign is about students and not about me. Please go to the March in huge numbers. Best of luck,” Kaur tweeted early on Tuesday “I’m withdrawing from the campaign. Congratulations everyone. I request to be left alone. I said what I had to say.”
The Lady Shri Ram College student said she had enough and that is all “my 20 year self could take”. “To anyone questioning my courage and bravery.. I’ve shown more than enough.”
