BJP legislator corners party over EBC quota
legislator and former minister Ghanshyam Tiwari on Monday took on his own government in the Assembly over the issue of reservations for economically backward classes (EBC) and special backward classes (SBC).
Speaking during the zero hour, Tiwari said that the government should explain the delay in issuing the notification for EBC reservation. “The government keeps on forming committees but is shying away from issuing a notification, which raises the question on the government’s intention” he said.
“Today, the situation is such that the Gujjars are not getting any benefits either of SBC or EBC. We should not allow a situation that leads to another agitation,” he said.
In reply, state social justice and empowerment minister Arun Chaturvedi said the previous Congress government had only made an announcement for providing reservations for EBC but did not set up any commission.
“This government will issue the notification for EBC reservations once we receive the commission’s report,” he said.
Last week, Tiwari had asked the state government to frame a legislation to fix the quota limit at 68%.
He claimed that a law on fixing quota upper limit cannot be stayed by any court as the states has the power to do so. HTC
