An unidentified group of people tried to exhume the body of a man at a graveyard in Kotda village on Tuesday night but they fled when villagers raised alarm and rushed to the spot.

Shah Hussain, son of the deceased, lodged an FIR at the Mandwa police station. Hussain suspects the role of groups involved in witchcraft which were possibly trying to steal human organs for sorcery, police said.

The incident was reported during late hours at Kotda village in Bikarni Gram Panchayat where the group dug the grave of Rasool Khan, 52, who died on Monday.

The group ran away when a local raised an alarm on first seeing torchlight at the graveyard and on finding some men digging the grave, Kotda police said.

Villagers told police that six months ago, a woman’s body was dug out of grave at Judra area in Kotra. Some organs were missing from the body, they added. Police suspect the involvement of an organ trafficking group in the Judra case.

On Wednesday, deputy superintendent of police Sumit Sharma and station house officer Bahadurmal Devra reached the spot to take stock of the situation. The two officers assured the bereaved family of action against the accused.

“We have started investigation and are confident of arresting the accused soon,” Bahadurmal said.
