Shobha Rani Kushwaha, the wife of former BSP MLA BL Kushwaha, who was convicted in a murder case, filed her nomination on a BJP ticket on Wednesday for the upcoming assembly bypoll in Dholpur.

The seat fell vacant after BL Kushwaha was awarded life imprisonment in a murder case by a local court in December last year.

State health minister Kali Charan Saraf; panchayati raj and rural development minister Rajendra Rathore; transport minister Yoonus Khan; state BJP president Ashok Parnami and MP Dushyant Singh were present when Kushwaha’s filed her nomination.

BJP MP Dushyant Singh said that the party hopes to win Dholpur with full majority.

“Chief minister Vasundhara Raje has carried out development works in Dholpur,” he added.

Saraf had declared Kushwaha as the party’s candidate for Dholpur in a meeting of party workers on Tuesday. Kushwaha had joined BJP on February 15.

BSP’s BL Kushwahah was elected as an MLA in the 2013 assembly election. The Dholpur local court sentenced him to life for the murder of Naresh Kushwaha on December 27, 2012, following which assembly speaker suspended his candidature on December 13, 2016.

There are 1.72 lakh voters in Dholpur constituency.

BJP has appointed former BJP legislator Abdul Sagir as chairman of Rajasthan Board of Muslim Waqfs to garner Muslim votes.

The returning officer said that the last date of filing nomination is March 21 while the date for withdrawal is March 24. The bypoll will be held on April 9.
