Teen suicide: Father blames hostel warden, lodges case
The father of an 18-yearold student of the University Maharani’s College who was found hanging in her hostel room Thursday, has alleged that she took the extreme step following harassment by the hostel warden and some other students, a charge denied by the college administration.
The father lodged complaint with the police alleging that she had told her family during Holi that the warden along with a few other students would harass her regularly. The complainant has also said that the other girls in the hostel would consume alcohol and trouble her but the warden didn’t take any action.
Based on the complaint, a case has been registered at Ashok Nagar police station under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC.
“The allegations (about students drinking and indulging in ragging) are absolutely untrue. We are all saddened by the death of the student and appeal everyone to not make false allegations against the administration keeping in mind the sensitive nature of the issue,” Alpana Kateja, principal, Maharani’s College told reporters Friday.
Earlier in the day, the students of the college staged a protest outside the institution in solidarity with the college administration. On the other hand, student leaders protested in Rajasthan University demanding strong action against those responsible for the negligence and asking for regular inspection of university hostels.
The college principal said that a three-member committee has been formed to internally investigate the matter.
During preliminary investigation it has been learnt that the deceased, a first-year student of BA, was an aspiring cricketer who was having difficulties in studying English.
“The postmortem report has revealed the cause of death as hanging. We have also recovered torn pieces of paper from the room, which are being sent to the forensic science laboratory along with samples of Prajapat’s handwriting to see if it was a suicide note,” said Bala Ram, station house officer, Ashok Nagar police station.
