Three Indian institutions including Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have found a place in the 200 best young universities in the world, according to the Times Higher Education young universities rankings in 2017.

Other than IIT-G, Tezpur University in Assam and Veltech University in Tamil Nadu have found places in the list. In 2016, only IIT-G was part of this list.

Interestingly, Veltech, which was not even ranked previously, has been ranked as best from India with a rank of 74 among the global best young universities. Both IIT-G and Tezpur University were placed in the 101-150 bracket.

The THE ranking takes into account institutions who are less than 50 year old for preparing the rankings.

Earlier this year, Veltech University secured a surprise 43rd rank among best universities in Asia, much ahead of several top IITs in India.

Globally, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland heads the global young universities league table. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Hong Kong), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Pohang University of Science and Technology in South Korea, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (South Korea) are the top five in the world respectively. Maastricht University (Netherlands), City University of Hong Kong, Ulm University (Germany), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany) and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (Italy) complete the top 10 list.

Overall, the UK is the mostrepresented nation in the table with 27 universities, followed by Australia with 23 institutions. The ranking is based on the same 13 performance indicators like industry income, research output, citation, as is the case in THE’s World University Rankings, but academic reputation is given a lower weighting.
