Two visually impaired students got eyesight, thanks to the Barmer district collector’s initiative.

Mula Ram (15) and Bhabuta Ram (12), students of Satya Sai Andh Avam Muk-Badhir Vidyalaya here, returned on Thursday after a successful surgery in Ahmedabad.

“I never expected that one day I would be able to see. Whenever my fellow students talked about natural beauty or an instrument, I found myself helpless and blamed the god,” said Mula Ram.

“Today I felt that I was wrong because god helped me. Now I can see the world. Those who helped in bringing back light to my life are like god’s angels.”

Collector Sudheer Sharma noticed the specially-abled students when they were presenting ‘Ramdhun’ during a Gandhi Jayanti programme on October 2 last year.

Sharma ordered health officials to get it examined if the students can regain eyesight.

After medical examination, health officials told the collector that the two students can regain eyesight after treatment, saying such facility is not available in Barmer.

Sharma then arranged for their treatment in Ahmedabad. Cairn India, an oil exploration company working in Barmer, bore the treatment expenses.

Satya Sai Andh Avam MukBadhir Vidyalaya organised a welcome ceremony for Mula and Bhabuta. The collector and CSR head of Cairn India Manoj Agarwal participated in the ceremony and asked the students about their feeling after gaining eyesight.

Lath Katchwah, joint secretary of SURE-Society to Uplift Rural Economy, an NGO that runs Satya Sai Andh Avam MukBadhir Vidyalaya for specially abled children in Barmer, thanked district authorities and Cairn India.

“The vidyalaya, established in 2005, has now 100 specially abled students. We are ensuring all possible methods to bring them to mainstream,” Katchwah said.
