The toll of persons getting killed in swollen rivers in Udaipur has now reached six after another woman got washed away by Gumati river at Navara bridge in Sarada Tehsil on Tuesday. Rescue operations are on and a SDRF team has been deployed to search for the missing woman.

The victim, who was identified as Hiri Bai, wife of Mahendra Patel, was a resident of Navara village.

She was returning home from the field when she fell victim to the raging torrent of the river. The incident occurred when she was crossing the Navara bridge. As soon as she stepped on the bridge, she slipped and was swept away by the Gumati river. One of the villagers who spotted her getting drowned raised an alarm and later called the police for help.

“Soon senior police and administration officials, including Sarada tehsildar, rushed to the scene but before a rescue operation could be launched, the victim disappeared into the waters. Later, the SDRF team was called to launch a search operation along with the local police and villagers. Although the rescuers are putting in their best effort, the victim hasn’t yet been found,” said SHO, Sarada police station, Shiv Nath. This is the fifth instance of people getting swept away in rivers, as earlier, four other people, including the SDM of Kushalgarh and a duo of a mother and daughter had also lost their lives in a similar way.
