The University of Rajasthan’s (RU) department of lifelong learning in collaboration with the Centre for Road Safety, Jaipur, has organised a five-day workshop for college teachers starting from Tuesday on road safety measures.

“The teachers will be trained by road safety experts and officials of the traffic police for eight hours every day,” said Dr Jayant Singh, director of department of lifelong learning.

Prerna Singh, coordinator for Centre for Road Safety, said, “A major cause behind accidents is lack of proper education pertaining to road safety norms. This is the reason why we are starting with schools and colleges. We’ll train them in such a way that they can further teach their colleagues.”

About 40 teachers registered for the workshop on the first day.

Teachers from the colleges under RU as well as teachers of other government and private colleges from Jaipur division joined the workshop.

They were given an overview of the road accident scenario in the state, the country and the world. The major causes of accidents, their economic and social concerns, and the role of teachers as change-makers were also taught in the workshop.

In the following days, the teachers will also be trained in basics such as driving license procedure, defensive driving concept, road signs helmet and seat-belt usage. Vehicle design, safe road concept, motor vehicle act, and insurance procedures are the other areas which the workshop will deal with. The teachers will also be trained in handling of victims and emergency medical response.

“Three more batches of 50 teachers each will be trained under the programme at universities in Ajmer, Jodhpur and Udaipur,” said Prerna Singh.
