Some passengers travelling through Jaipur airport might have been overcharged for extra luggage.
An inspection carried out on Monday of the consumer department’s weight and measure unit found that weighing scales at three airline counters were not meeting the standards while one airline was rounding off the extra weight to the nearest maximum unit and charging extra.
The consumer department has registered cases under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 ,while the airport management has asked for a report from Spice Jet Airlines that was found to be rounding off the weight.
“We have weighing scales installed by the AAI that are inspected at regular intervals, but some airlines use their own weighing scales. I have asked for a report from one airline,” said Jaipur airport director, J S Balhara.
The consumer department’s weight and measure unit deputy controller, Sohanlal Yogi said the electronic weighing scale at the counter of Indigo airline did not have a verification certificate and at the counter of Spice Jet airline, the passengers were being overcharged by rounding off the luggage weight. The weighing scale at Air India also had some irregularities.
It was found that a passenger carrying 1.8 kilograms of weight in excess to the permissible free limit was being charged for 2 kg Officials said action was taken following complaints related to over-weighing of luggage and charging extra. Some passengers were not even given a weight receipt.
The department also issued notice to a sweet shop counter at the airport for not mentioning the weight on pre-packaged box of sweet and also issued notice to a restaurant at the airport for selling packaged drinking water above the MRP. HTC
