President Ram Nath Kovind announced on Saturday the appointment of five new governors and a Lt governor with Banwarilal Purohit taking charge of the constitutional post in Tamil Nadu, where a political turmoil is brewing due to a power struggle within the ruling AIADMK .
BJP leader Satya pal Malik will be the new occupant of the Raj Bhawan in Patna while current Andaman and Nicobar Island Lt governor, Jagdish Mukhi, was made the governor of Assam.
Former chief of naval staff Admiral (retired) DK Joshi was announced as Mukhi’s replacement in Port Blair. The President also announced Brigadier (retired) BD Mishra will be the new governor of Arunachal Pradesh and Ganga Prasad of Meghalaya.
Before the latest set of appointment, Maharashtra governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao was holding the additional charge of Tamil Nadu. Purohit, the incumbent governor of Assam, was a two-term Congress MP from Nagpur before joining the BJP in 1990s. He is credited with the revival of ‘The Hitavada’, an English daily founded by Mahatama Gandhi’s mentor Gopal Krishna Gokhale.
Malik, a former member of parliament and BJP’s current national vice-president, will move into the Patna’s Raj Bhawan, which became vacant after Kovind shifted to the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Admiral (Retd) Joshi, the new LG of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, commanded the Vizagbased eastern fleet of the navy and has received a number of gallantry awards for his service.
