Anirban Lahiri had an afternoon to forget as he and his International team-mates were left humbled by a rampaging United States who grabbed a commanding 8-2 lead on Friday in the Presidents Cup. Lahiri and partner South African Charl Schwartzel absorbed the worst beating as Charley Hoffman and Kevin Chappell administered a 6&5 thrashing to collect the first US point of the day.

The Internationals, meanwhile, stumbled out of the starting blocks with Lahiri disqualified from playing the third hole after taking a practice shot out of the bunker at the second. Players are allowed to practice putting after the holes have been determined but cannot practice shots from anywhere else on the course.

“It was just an oversight on his part,” said International captain Nick Price. “He’s obviously trying to prove to all of us that his pick was worth it and it’s put a lot of pressure on him.”

HOCKEY TEAMS LOSE

India A women’s hockey team was handed a 0-7 defeat by New South Wales (NSW) at the 2017 Women’s Australian Hockey League here. The India A men’s team too went down to New South Wales 0-1 in a closely fought encounter at the 2017 men’s Australian Hockey League.

PALLIKAL’S RUN ENDS

Dipika Pallikal’s run at the Oracle NetSuite Open ended with a crushing semi-final defeat at the hands of Malaysia’s eight-time world champion Nicol David. David, who would appear in the final of this event for the first time in her career, outclassed Pallikal 11-3, 11-0, 11-5 in 22 minutes.

“I found my volleys and I was really pleased to win 3-0 and the way I played,” David said after the match.
