Obtaining a driving licence will become easier with the Jaipur regional transport office (RTO) introducing a queue management system like one used in passport offices.

Five different counters have been opened to ensure that people do not have to stand long in queues at any single counter and the work is distributed properly, states a transport department order. People can use the designated counters for paying fees, filing documents and obtaining the licence, the order said.

Applicants will be issued tokens and will have to visit the counter that displays the numbers according to turn. The system has been developed by a private company.

State transport secretary Shailendra Agrawal inaugurated the new facility on Friday following a week-long trial.

A queue management system is used to control queues in a similar way used at passport offices and banks.

Online applicants will need to reach the office on the date and time allocated and collect the token from the token dispensing machine. The designated counter number will depend on whether the fees have been paid online or if it has to be paid at the counter.

Once the formalities are completed an applicant can appear for the driving test.

Since May, the RTO is accepting only online applications for driving licences. Apart from the licence application, renewal, duplicate license, permanent license and address change can also be done online, officials said.

With the introduction of the online application system, paperwork has come down besides it has also curbed the use of middlemen for getting driving license from the RTO, some of them said.
