Proteas ride du Plessis 91 to reach 369/9
Faf du Plessis led another South African assault on Bangladesh’s bowlers before he was forced to retire hurt nine runs short of a century in the third and final one-day international at Buffalo Park on Sunday.
The South African captain made 91 off 67 balls as South Africa piled up 369 for six, their highest one-day total against Bangladesh and the highest total at the ground.
Du Plessis looked set for a ninth one-day international century before he suffered what a team official described as an acute lower back strain while running between wickets. The injury ruled him out of the rest of the match. He hit ten fours and a six.
But the Proteas had a strong finish to match their strong start at Buffalo Park, with Kagiso Rabada unleashing some big shots — and three fours and a six — for his 23 not out from 11 balls. Farhaan Behardien was 33 not out from 24 balls.
As in his Test debut, when he made 97 against the same opponents last month, Markram’s innings was ended by a run-out. Markram hit four fours and two sixes.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz took 2/59 on his return to the Bangladesh team and Taskin Ahmed 2/66. Bangladesh is searching for a first win on its tour of South Africa, having lost the Test series 2-0 and gone down 2-0 in the ODIs.
Brief scores: South Africa 369/6 in 50 overs (F du Plessis 91, Q de Kock 73, A Markram 66) v Bangladesh.
