Transgender group holds mass wedding, 10 couples tie knot
Inauniqueinitiative, a transgender group Thursday conducted a mass wedding in Bharatpurwhere10couples,both fromHinduandMuslimcommunities, from impoverished families tied the knot .
AttheceremonyinBharatpur, the couples were married off as pertherituals of their respective communities.
The women were from poor families and their parents were notinaposition to organise their marriage, saidNettuBai, headof thetransgendercommunity,who has been organising such weddings since 2012.
Besides bearing the wedding expenses, the group also offers jewellery and clothes to the couples, besides organising feast for theguests.“Wesavemoneyevery yeartoorganisetheweddingsfor girls from poor families,” Nettu Bai said.
Popularlyknownas“mausi”, Nettu Bai was elected as the corporatorfromWard29oftheBharatpur Municipal Corporation in November 2014.

her ward. She claims to save nearly ₹4,000 every day to organise the mass weddings every year.
She said that she identifies girlsfromimpoverishedfamilies which don’t have the means to marry off their daughters and then selects 10 of them for the mass wedding.
“I have been spreading the messagetosavethegirlchildand request people to give their daughterstothegroupiftheyare unable to feed them,” said Nettu Bai, who also takes care of the women after their marriage.
