China’s solution gets approval
ChinasaidonMondayits three-step proposal to tackle the Rohingya crisis, beginning with aceasefire,hasbeenapprovedby Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Morethan600,000membersof the Rohingya community have fled to Bangladesh since late August,whentheMyanmarmilitary launched a crackdown in Rakhine state following attacks by Rohingya militants.
The atrocities and hardships facedbytheRohingya-described by the UN human rights chief as “ethnic cleansing” - have triggered an international outcry.
China’sforeignministerWang Yi had presented the three-step proposal to tackle the crisis duringhistriptoBangladeshandhis ongoing visit to Myanmar. On Monday, an Asia-Europe Meetingofforeignministersopenedin Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw.
“His (Wang’s) initiative was approvedinBangladeshandalso won approval from Myanmar. I hope the proposal will help resolve the current crisis and more importantly, fundamentally address the crisis,” foreign ministryspokespersonLuKang told a regular news briefing.
Astatementfrom China’sforeign ministry quoted Wang as

saying that a ceasefire shouldbe followed by bilateral dialogue to find a workable solution.
It addedthefinal phasewould focus on working toward a longtermsolution.Wangwasquoted bytheChinesestatemediaassayingthatthe“turbulenceinMyanmar has become a burden to BangladeshevenasBangladesh manages to provide humanitarian aid to the Rohingya people whohavecrossedtheborderinto Bangladesh”.
Headded,“Withthehardwork of all sides, at present the first phase’saimhasalreadybasically been achieved, and the key is to preventaflare-up,especiallythat there is no rekindling the flames of war.” Wang said the international community should help createanatmosphereforconsultations.
