Gujarat becomes second state after Madhya Pradesh to ban Padmavati

- HT Correspondent letters@hindustantimes.com

problems for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati appear to be mounting despite the makers deferring it voluntarily and announcing the film’s new release date will be decided only after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) clears it. On Wednesday, poll-bound Gujarat became the second state to ban the film that stars Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmini. The film was banned by Madhya Pradesh on Monday.

Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani said, “No Padmavati in Gujarat. The government will not allow its release in the state. We don’t want any controversy and law and order situation in the state. The state home department decided against allowing its release.”

The state goes to polls in December and the CM said the decision has been made keeping this in mind. “There are elections here and there could be a law and order situation. Many sections are hurt and have opposed it too,” he said.

Earlier, Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told reporters that the film which has “distorted facts” about Rajput queen Padmavati and shows or says anything to disrespect her, will not be released in Madhya Pradesh. He said even if the movie is passed by the censor board, it won’t make it to the screens in the state.

Other state governments, such as Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan , have also asked for edits in the film to remove “objectionable” parts that hurt the sentiments of the Rajput community.
