A man set his two wives on fire Tuesday afternoon for nagging, police said on Wednesday. The man has confessed to his crime and arrested.

Police said Deepa Ram, 30, of Sesawa village in Jalore district took his two wives, Mali Devi (28) and Dariya Devi (22) in a car to get them jewellery from neighbouring Barmer district. He also carried two litres of petrol.

“At a secluded place, he got out of the car and set the vehicle on fire after pouring petrol on it,” said Teju Singh in charge of Chittalwana police station.

Singh said the man concocted a story that the car caught fire on its own and passers-by rescued him. The women were charred by the time help reached.

However, police doubted his story. “His second wife, Dariya, has an eight-month-old daughter. We found it odd for a mother to not take the infant with her. Secondly, during investigation, we found that the two wives did not get along. It was unusual then that they agreed to go together to get jewellery,” Singh added.

JAIPUR:

On Tuesday, it was reported that the man suffered burns and was taken to Gujarat for treatment. When police questioned him, he admitted that he had killed his wives because he was troubled by their nagging.

The police officer said Deepa Ram worked in Gujarat as a building contractor and kept second wife with him there. He has two children with the first wife.

Singh said Deepa Ram came to Jalore two days ago.

PTI quoted the Jalore additional SP Binja Ram as saying that he killed the wives as they did not keep his mother happy.

Talking to a TV news channel, the man said he didn’t want to kill the first wife but she got locked in the car. He said he was disturbed by the second wife’s nagging.
