JAMMU: Met with displaced families & victims of shelling in Poonch... A stark reminder that our future doesn’t only depend on the conflicts that take place, but more so on the solutions, we offer in response to them. MEHBOOBA MUFTI, J&K CM

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday met people affected by shelling by Pakistan along the LoC a day earlier.

“Met with displaced families & victims of shelling in Poonch this afternoon. A stark reminder that our future doesn’t only depend on the conflicts that take place, but more so on the solutions, we offer in response to them,” Mehbooba posted on her Twitter handle.

Shelling by Pakistan in Balakote sector of Poonch on Sunday killed five members of a family, leaving two sisters orphaned and injured. Five soldiers were also injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, the J&K High Court Bar Association strongly criticised the Pakistan Army for the “heinous and inhuman act”.

Speaking at the meeting, association president advocate BS Slathia expressed deep concern over the incident and sympathy with the victims.

Slathia appealed to Pakistan to stop firing on innocent civilians and the Indian forces guard- ing the LoC.

He said Pakistan was responsible for repeated acts of ceasefire violations and attacks on innocent civilians, probably to encourage infiltration. Slathia added that the Indian government must take stern action against Pakistan and ensure peace on the LoC.

“Both the countries should sit across the table and sort out all the issues,” he said.

He requested the administration to make necessary arrangements so that people could be provided safer places in the form of camps, bunkers and medical facilities. Slathia also asked the government to pay a compensation of ₹10 lakh each to the family of the victims.
