A seven-member special investigation team (SIT) led by deputy superintendent of police Ashok Kumar has been constituted by the Dumka Superintendent of police to probe the rape case involving a 12-year-old tribal girl who was allegedly gang-raped on Sunday night.

The girl was recovered in an unconscious state from an underconstruction building in the vicinity of her house with her legs tied and mouth stuffed with sand and cloth under Dumka sadar police station on Monday.

Dumka SP Koshal Kishor said the SIT team led by DSP Ashok Kumar has six other officers of different police stations.

“We are investigating the case from all possible angles to nab the accused. Since the girl could not identify any of the involved accused, we have filed a case against unknown under relevant sections of IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act that was amended recently through an ordinance. We are expecting headway soon,” Kishor said.

Meanwhile, police have recovered undergarments, hair band and other items from the incident spot, officials said.

Though out of danger, Dumka civil surgeon Suresh Kumar said the girl is still recovering in hospital. Meanwhile, the members of the main opposition Jharkhand Mukti Morcha staged a day-long dharma on Tuesday near the office of the deputy commissioner to vent their anger against the incident. Demonstrators demanded immediate arrest of the involved persons.
