Jaipur institute offers beauty care the ayurveda way

Beauty products containing chemicals are sold at high costs in the name of ayurveda, and people buy them, though they may not have the desired effect, said Prof Sanjeev Sharma, director of the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA).

The institute at Jaipur started a beauty clinic in July last year to treat beauty-related problems according to the principles of Ayurveda, Sharma said.

“This is the first beauty clinic at the Ayurvedic hospital in Rajasthan. The response has been quite good,” he said. “In February this year, NIA also started a beauty course for 40 hours, and an advanced beauty course will be run from July.”

NIA is the apex institute for training and research in Ayurveda, established in 1976 at Jaipur by the union ministry of health & family welfare.

Dr Krutika Joshi, in-charge of the beauty clinic, said 30-40 people come daily to the outpatient department (OPD), which runs for six days a week except Sundays.

“Patients are in the age group of 16 to 50 and they include students, homemakers, office goers, and professionals. They come with problems, such as acne, pimples, hair fall, dandruff, grey hair, and so on,” Joshi said.

“The problem is diagnosed and treated on the basis of the principles of Ayurveda -- vata, pitta and kapha.” Vata, pitta, and kapha -collectively known as the doshas—are one of the most foundational concepts in Ayurveda.

Products used in the treatment are available at home and kitchen gardens, Joshi said. “The cost of beauty products made at home is much cheaper -- around 30%-50% of the MRP of those available in the market.”

She said, “Would-be brides, instead of spending big amounts on makeup to look beautiful for a few hours, can come to the clinic in advance and get their beauty enhanced through pure ayurvedic products.”

Dr Mita Kotecha, head of dravyaguna department of the institute, said, “The basic beauty course for 40 hours is open to anybody who is a graduate, or at least a Class 12 pass, and the fee is ~ 10,000.”

The basic beauty course teaches about hair care, face care, manicure, pedicure, dental care, eye and lip care using herbal medicines, fresh vegetables and fruits. Sharma said, “The advanced beauty course for two weeks will be run for those who have completed the basic course, and the batch will be of 10 people.”
