The Macaulay model of education has adversely affected the education system. Its motto was not to impart education but to maintain the dominance of Britishers in the country, state assembly speaker, Kailash Meghwal said on Thursday.

Addressing the 24th Bhamashah Felicitation ceremony, he said, “Macaulay model has given birth to a psyche due to which experts are leaving their core field to join government departments, which is a big concern for all of us. We need to find a solution to these problems.”

The state government honoured 117 Bhamashahs (philanthropists) and 50 contributors for donating around Rs 82 crore for the promotion of education and development of government schools in the state.

Sharing his concerns over the present education system, Meghwal said that once, India was a leader in world education but no longer is now. “This is a matter of concern and we should have a discussion on how to become an education leader in the world.”

He congratulated all the Bhamashahs who supported the education system of the state.

Among those honoured were Kamla Bhoi, a vegetable seller, from Dungarpur. Bhoi, a widow, lives with her three children in Dungarpur and earns her livelihood by selling vegetables.

Presiding over the function, the minister of state for education, Vasudev Devnani, said that with the help of Bhamashahs, efforts will be made to set up schools on the lines of Nalanda, Takshashila. He said that the society is grateful to all such Bhamashahs. Underlining the contribution made by the education department, Devnani said, “People are showing trust in government schools as the quality of education has improved drastically. Once the state was at 26th rank in terms of education but now it has reached the second spot,” said Devnani.
