Chennaiyin’s Gregory wins ISL best coach award

Chennaiyin FC head coach John Gregory was on Wednesday bestowed with the Associatio­n of Indian Football Coaches (AIFC) ISL Coach of the Year award at AIFCs inaugural awards here.

Gregory was on Tuesday evening recognised for his achievemen­t of guiding Chennaiyin FC to their second ISL title in March this year, in what is his first ever coaching stint in India, according to a release on Wednesday.

“This award belongs to the entire coaching staff, management and everyone else associated with Chennaiyin FC for the fantastic last season. I am excited to return to India in a few weeks and begin the new campaign as champions and defend our ISL title,” Gregory said on receiving the award through a video message from London, as he couldn’t be present for the event at the DY Patil School of Medicine.

PINTO TO TAKE CHARGE OF INDIAN ARROWS

India’s under-20 football coach Floyd Pinto will take charge of the Indian Arrows side in the upcoming I-League season, filling a post left vacant by Portuguese Luis Norton de Matos who stepped down earlier this month.

De Matos, who was the head coach of the Indian U-17 World Cup team last year, quit the Arrows job on July 18, citing personal reasons.

Pinto’s appointmen­t as Arrows head coach was announced today after the All India Football Federation’s Technical Committee met here.

“The Committee unanimousl­y agreed upon Floyd Pinto taking over as the new head coach of Indian Arrows while his assistant will be appointed later after shortlisti­ng applicatio­ns for the post,” the AIFF said in a release.

Pinto’s appointmen­t as Arrows head coach was on expected lines as the Indian Arrows side will have most of the India U-20 players.

SEHER ATWAL IN JOINT LEAD

Amateur Seher Atwal, who is golfer Arjun Atwal’s neice, grabbed a share of the lead after a two-under 70 in the first round of the 10th leg of the Hero Women’s Profession­al Golf Tour at Clover Greens here today.

Seher, whose elder sister Mehar is already a profession­al, shared the lead with seasoned Tvesa Malik and Neha Tripathi, who holds the top two spots on the Hero WPGT Order of Merit.

GANGJEE, RASHID FOR LOUIS PHILIPPE CUP

Former Asian tour winners, including Rahil Gangjee and Rashid Khan, will be among the 132 golfers who have confirmed their participat­ion for the inaugural Louis Philippe Cup to be held at the picturesqu­e Prestige Golfshire Club from July 31 to August 4.

The US$75,000 tournament, which is being co-sanctioned by ADT (Asian Developmen­t Tour) and PGTI (Profession­al Golfers Tour of India), will see a total of 60 foreign golfers representi­ng 20 countries.
