10 killed in UP rainrelate­d incidents in past 24 hours

Ten persons were killed and seven others injured in rain-related incidents in different parts of Uttar Pradesh during past 24 hours, a senior official said here on Monday even as the Met office issued a warning of very heavy rains in the next 48 hours in eastern and central parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has directed senior officials of all the districts to undertake extensive tours in the affected areas and identify dilapidate­d buildings and get them vacated, a government spokespers­on said here.

“Ten persons were killed and seven injured in different parts of the UP since Sunday. The toll since last week in such incidents has reached 80 while total injured are 84 till 11.30am today (Monday),” relief commission­er Sanjay Prasad said.

Since last week, the maximum 11 deaths were reported from Saharanpur district. As many as 44 cattle were killed and 451 houses were also damaged in these incidents, he said.

The chief minister has also directed officials to give financial and medical assistance to the people severely affected by the rains, the spokesman said.

Heavy rains disrupted normal life in various parts of the state on Monday, leading to water-logging and traffic snarl in several cities including the state capital.

While overnight drizzling was reported from some parts, the skies opened up on Monday morning, a little after 8.30am and the downpour continued for well over next three hours, inundating most parts of Lucknow, including the posh areas like Gomtinagar, Indiranaga­r, Hazratganj and Mahanagar.

Met director JP Gupta has said that there would be intermitte­nt rains across the state in the next two days.
