BHOPAL: THE BJP HAS SET ITS TARGET POST200 SEATS THIS TIME, RIDING WHAT IT BELIEVES IS A PROINCUMBENCY WAVE

Having rephrased its slogan ‘Congress mukt Bharat’ as ‘Abki baar 200 paar’, Madhya Pradesh BJP expects its manifesto committee this time to do wonders for it in 2018 assembly elections, hardly three months away, say BJP sources.

StateassemblyinMadhyaPradesh has the strength of 230 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has set its ambitious target post-200 seats this time, riding what it believes a pro-incumbency wave in favour of Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh and also Narendra Modi government at the Centre.

In 2013 assembly elections, BJP had won 165 seats with the vote share of 44.88% whereas the Congress had to be content with 58 seats with 36.38% vote share.

BJP leadership has relied once again on capabilities of the veteran leader Vikram Verma to head the party’s manifesto committee for the fourth time in a row.

“Preparing manifesto this time is as daunting a task as getting past 200,” said a BJP leader on condition of anonymity.

Another party leader said, “Brainstorming sessions are going on to see what could be different and more attractive in 2018 manifesto in comparison to those of previous polls.”

“Unanimity seems to be emerging among the party leaders to base the manifesto on a ‘New India’ theme which is close to the heart of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. There may be promises on jobs to youth, IT parks, food processing units, more sops for farmers and labourers etc. The theme of the manifesto will be a ‘New India’ theme”, he added.

Verma said, “BJP manifesto will have a reflection of people’s aspirations in the 21st century. The party is in the process of getting feedback from people to incorporate their valuable suggestions in its manifesto.”

State Congress spokesperson Pankaj Chatruvedi said, “Instead of a new manifesto the BJP government should fulfil its party’s promises it had made in 2003, 2008 and 2013 elections. Since, it couldn’t fulfil most of its promises the BJP and its government both should tender apology to people ahead of the elections.”
